Taking care of yourself starts with cleanliness, and intimate hygiene is an essential aspect of that. But is simply splashing water and using soap enough? Definitely not.

Doctors strongly advise against using regular soap in intimate areas. Why? Because it can disrupt your vagina's natural pH balance, which is crucial in preventing infections. The vagina has its own ecosystem of bacteria, and while they’re not harmful in normal conditions, an imbalance can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast, causing infections.

Common symptoms include inflammation, unusual discharge, itching, burning, or pain, and about 90% of women experience this at some point. Yet, these issues often go undiscussed. Left untreated, infections can worsen, so proper hygiene is crucial.

Keeping the area dry and well-ventilated, avoiding scented products, and refraining from self-medicating are vital steps in maintaining intimate health. Identifying the correct type of infection is essential before starting any treatment. And of course, practicing safe sex is a must to prevent infections.

A close friend once shared her experience with me. At just 14, she noticed itching and inflammation in her intimate area. Too embarrassed to tell her parents, she tried washing the area with soap, thinking it would help. But after a week, things got worse. Eventually, she confided in her mother, who took her to a doctor. The doctor explained that there’s no shame in experiencing vaginal infections and that using soap only worsened the problem. She was advised to wear breathable, skin-friendly underwear and keep the area dry.

This story highlights how adopting simple hygiene practices can make a world of difference. Remember, your vagina is just as important as any other part of your body—love and care for it to lead a healthy and happy life!
